Standing stone

Standing stone

A sculptural installation for a private garden in the Lleyn Peninsula, Wales. Installed late summer 2009.

Responding to the brief to create a 'standing stone' which would belong in this ancient landscape as do the ancient stones placed by our ancestors. I sought to create a contemporary work which at the same time reflects mythological beliefs. The North-South solar alignment was laid out, using ancient techniques, at the Summer Solstice.

Stone 1
Natural stone selected at a local farm and placed at the North point of the alignment. Installed 'as is' to reflect perceived solidity - reality as we experience it.

Stone 2
Lines from a map of the garden, lanes and field boundaries around the installation site, drawn up into three-dimensions. I have used the mapped lines to create a link between this sculpture and the surrounding landscape.

Stone 3
Natural stone selected at a local farm and placed at the South point of the alignment. Woven over with a copper wire 'net' to enhance and reveal the energy field of the stone.
